Spider-Man's Andrew Garfield: Playing Spidey Left My 'Heart Broken a Little Bit'

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains several rumored spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Although Spidey can save the world from imminent doom, he can't swing from through your screen and save you from reading ahead if you want to be surprised when the threequel hits theaters this December. Read at your own risk.

Well, folks, it seems we finally broke Andrew Garfield.

Yep, after months upon months of being endlessly hounded by Marvel's rabid fanbase, with interviewers and viewers alike asking him over and over and over again whether he will make an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home despite damn well knowing if he says anything other than “no” or “watch the movie and find out” he'll be personally castrated Marvel overlord Kevin Feige himself, it seems the star has apparently had enough of our bullshit.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Garfield took a relatively uncharacteristic no-holds-barred approach to speaking about the franchise, the state of capitalism as a whole, as well as his time sporting the Spidey suit, recalling how the dream role not only led to him getting his “heart broken a little bit” but also took him “from being a naive boy to growing up."

“How could I ever imagine that it was going to be a pure experience?” he mused. “There are millions of dollars at stake and that’s what guides the ship. It was a big awakening and it hurt."

Part of this pain, he says, came specifically from the Comic-Con experience. “Comic-Con in San Diego is full of grown men and women still in touch with that pure thing the character meant to them," he told the outlet of this phenomenon. " you add in market forces and test groups and suddenly the focus is less on the soul of it and more on ensuring we make as much money as possible. And I found that–find that–heartbreaking in all matters of the culture.”

As anyone who has ever participated in a focus group, shitty hot dogs, energy drinks, or hell, even Spider-Man doesn't hit the same when corporate as all hell.
