Netflix's New Dating Show Looks Like A Furry's Fever Dream

Reader, do you like animal shows and dating shows? Were you screaming at your TV when Zootopia's resident bunny cop Judy Hopps and fox grifter Nick Wilde didn't get together at the end of the movie? Did you watch Connor B. roll up to The Bachelorette wearing a fuzzy cat costume and found yourself thinking “wow, there really need to be more men in fursuits on here?”

In yet another instance of TV execs attempting to shoehorn the highly dystopian concept of The Masked Singer into literally every reality genre imaginable, it seems fur-clad contestants will begin taking on the world of dating, with Netflix's new nightmare-inducing series, Sexy Beasts. A hybrid of Love Is Blind and Animal Planet's various nature specials, the show is based on a BBC series of the same name, centering on singles attempting to fall in love while donning a variety of nightmare-inducing prosthetic animal features. The question it attempts to finally answer once and for all?: “Could you fall in love with someone based on personality alone?”

While fans may not have an answer at the moment as the series, which has already been greenlit for two seasons, has yet to appear on the streaming service, there are several other questions that have been explicitly answered via the show's fever dream of a trailer. Pandas can ask about health insurance and have babies before 25. Dolphins do find themselves at the center of love triangles.  Beavers can proudly exclaim the words “ass first, personality second.” It's a wild time folks – no pun intended.

“Making ‘Sexy Beasts’ for Netflix has been an incredibly exciting process," said the series' creator, Simon Welton. "With an international cast featuring some truly brilliant characters, a host of prosthetics which look extraordinary in 4K and with Rob Delaney narrating, the viewers are in for a real treat. I hope the show puts a smile on peoples’ faces as they play along to discover who’ll fall in love with who, and what our cast all really look like.”

So, folks here's to reality TV getting stranger and stranger – may we all avoid recurring nightmares of dolphin/human hybrids attempting to seduce us.
